(Thomasville Times) DAVIDSON COUNTY — Despite a room full of Southmont residents who oppose a planned sports complex, the Davidson County Board of Commissioners voted 5-1 June 23 to move forward with the $65 million, 350-acre project.
The board also voted 5-1 to spend $4.1 million on the design phase for the facility, which the commissioners have referred to as the Southmont Community Center in written documents.
Commissioner Matt Mizell was the only opposing vote on both issues. Commissioner Tripp Kester was absent from the meeting.
Before the votes, the board listened to approximately an hour of people telling them why they do not want the facility in the small, rural community south of Lexington. Two people spoke in favor of the complex, saying it is desperately needed to provide youths and families something to do in Davidson County.
The facility will be off N.C. 8 and Owens Road. It will include a 52,000-square-foot community recreation center and an aquatics center, as well as 10 soccer fields, eight baseball fields, tennis courts, pickleball courts, restrooms, concession stands, a pavilion, playgrounds, a cross-country track, a water park, a camping area, a walking trail and parking lots.
