What people are saying
The community of Southmont did not have a say in whether Davidson County should build an "East Coast Destination" style park with nearly half as many parking places as Carowinds in their rural area. We held meetings in Southmont for the community and captured some of their comments so they could have a voice.
We asked Southmont residents to rank their concerns with the Sportsplex as proposed. The concerns are as follows, ranked from top concern to least: Traffic, Infrastructure (roads, lodging, EMS, food), Environment (noise, lights, watershed, wildlife), Lack of transparency, Rural character changes, Cost and more urgent needs, Lack of community involvement, and lastly, Crime.
Location
Southmont is approximately 20 minutes off I-85 via Linwood Southmont Road, which is a winding two lane road with limited sight distance, or 20 minutes off I-85 down NC highway 8, which is a two lane road for part of the distance.
The nearest hotel is a 20 minute drive, and there are only a few small restaurants in Southmont. The nearest medical facility (an urgent care) is a 20 minute drive away.
